Power Boat Courses

RYA Powerboat Level 2
The Level 2 course is an introduction to power boating and is aimed at the complete beginner.

This is a 2 day course run over consecutive Saturdays.

At the end of the course the successful student will have completed a formal assessment and be able to handle a boat in familiar waters by day, they will be safety conscious, and have a basic knowledge of power boating

On satisfactory completion, a Level 2 certificate will be issued which will enable you to use the club's safety boats for safety boat cover .

The syllabus will include both theory and background information on types of craft and engines, weather forecasts, tides and their effects, collision regulations and chartwork, launching and recovery, and the practical sessions will include use of safety equipment and safety briefing including boat checks, picking up a mooring, anchoring, recovering person overboard, close quarter handling, high speed handling, use of GPS and compass

The course is delivered on the water using both high speed RIB's (Rigid Inflatable Boats powered by outboard engines) and displacement vessel  (traditional hull form powered by diesel engine) providing experience in the very different handling characteristics of these two types of craft.

RYA Safety Boat Course
This is a 2 day course for the more experienced powerboat handler and the Level 2 Powerboat certificate is a pre-requisite.
The course covers rescue techniques for dinghies, canoes and windsurfers.

NSSC Piddinghoe Safety Boat Course
The pre-requisite for this course is a powerboat Level 2 certificate. However, it is a non-RYA recognised course and is designed to cover the operation of the safety boats and equipment at Piddinghoe. It focusses on techniques  best suited to providing safety cover at Piddinghoe (mast stuck in mud, boat embedded in reeds etc) and should be considered as essential training by those who provide safety cover especially on cadet events.
