   John Long

John Long, a one time member of NSSC passed away on 20th January 2010 aged 91.

His is a name and face that will, now, be familiar to just but a few NSSC members.

Our first memory of John, his first wife Yvonne and their sons David and James, dates from the purchase from him in 1966 of an Enterprise dinghy, sail number 10506, named’ Carina’. This was our first introduction to sailing dinghies (which pastime/obsession has continued until this day) and also to Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club which we immediately  joined at his suggestion and for which path we are eternally gratefull.

Soon after we joined NSSC, the Enterprises began a meteoric expansion, if I recall correctly around forty boats at one point. John, however, having sold me the Enterprise soon afterwards purchased a Leader dinghy. He did not race a great deal, preferring to cruise, but joined in with some of the Enterprise camping/cruising events at Chichester and Poole harbours. Meanwhile David and James had a Fireball,’ Rising Damp’, and later a Merlin, ‘Wot A Rocket’ (which we later owned) which they raced with vigour and considerable success at NSSC.

John, after Yvonne’s death, later re-married Kathleen, who pre-deceased him, and moved to Norfolk where David, Coral and family still reside.

Alan and Bett Simmons.

Roy who was only 50 had a heart attack and died on Christmas day 2008 whilst on holiday with his family and friends in France.

Parents will remember Roy and his daughter Issy from Cadet events. Coordinator Caroline Turner remembers Roy as ..' one of the nicest people I have ever met .. he would always help out when he could.' The photo is of Roy helping at Cadet Week 2005.

Roy's partner Sue Marks and his family would like to see some solid, permanent feature at Piddinghoe Pond in Roy's memory.

Sue has advised that the funeral will be Saturday 24th January at 11.15, Woodvale Crematorium, Lewes Road, Brighton, BN2 3LG. No Flowers. Donations via Coopers (Undertakers) to NSSC. Afterwards at East Sussex National Golf Course for tea and cake.
